2010 Kirky (Ian Kirkpatrick) Signature Series Reserve Chardonnay

Description

Pale lemon gold in colour, this wine shows hazelnut nougat and floral notes on the nose, with hints of apricot and cream. Flavours of nectarine and apricot are evident on the palate which has an elegant balance of fruit, oak and creamy malolactic characters.

Viticulture

Clone 15 Chardonnay planted as two metre wide rows, two metres between vines, trained as two cane VSP. Predominant soil type is clay loam with pumice sub layers. Cropping levels are vine specific, decided at pruning and again at fruit set. Canopy management aims at maximising air flow, sun exposure and fruit health.
The lowest cropping, ripest fruit was hand harvested for this wine.

Analyses at harvest, 7 March 2010:

Winemaking

The very best fruit from the KEW Chardonnay vineyard has been hand harvested and fermented in mature French and American oak barriques. Complexity, palate texture and fruit expression has been achieved with yeast selection, wild fermentation and partial malolactic fermentation. Extended barrel maturation has given this wine excellent balance of subtle oak and concentrated fruit flavours.

No fining agents were required to enhance this wine.

Analyses at bottling, 23 March 2011:

pH: 3.42
TA: 6.3g/L
Alc: 13.4%
RS: 1 g/L

Notes

Owner Simon Kirkpatrick said it was an opportune time to pay tribute to his famous uncle and showcase some of the best wine Gisborne has to offer.
“The Rugby World Cup 2011" was an historic occasion for us all and we thought it was a great time to commemorate Ian’s contribution to the sport. He amassed 113 matches for the All Blacks, 43 as captain. and is still regarded as one of New Zealand rugby’s all-time greats having played for the All Blacks from 1967 to 1977 and is still held in high regard for his exploits against the Springboks, Australia, France and the British and Irish Lions. For a forward, and playing in an era where only the backs were meant to score tries, his ability to beat players with strength, speed and athleticism saw him score an incredible 50 tries for the All Blacks over his 10-year career. He is still regarded in the top 20 All Blacks of all time.
This wine is a collector's item as it has a photo of Ian with all his amazing statistics and this very limited release is personally signed by Ian.
